Quick answer

New Jersey residents apply for China visas through the Chinese Consulate General in New York. There's no Chinese consulate in New Jersey. The Consulate doesn't accept mailed applications, so someone has to submit and collect your passport in Manhattan. With ChinaVisaMail, you complete COVA online, and once it shows “Passport to be Submitted,” we handle the in-person submission and pickup for you. You never go to the Consulate.

Across New Jersey

Close to Manhattan, but it's still two weekday trips

For most of New Jersey, distance isn't the problem. Timing is. The visa office is open on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, it doesn't mail passports back, and pickup comes about four business days after you submit. That's two separate weekday visits to the far west edge of Midtown.

AreaMain townsGetting to 12th AvenueDoing it yourself
Hudson CountyJersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City~3–8 mi · PATH or a NY Waterway ferry to West 39th StreetShort trips, but two weekday mornings

Approximate one-way distances. The Consulate is at 12th Avenue and West 42nd Street, about four long blocks west of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where most NJ Transit buses arrive.

Which consulate?

Is there a Chinese consulate in New Jersey?

No, and it never sends you to Washington or anywhere else. All of New Jersey belongs to the New York Consulate, so in COVA you choose New York.

The question we hear most from South Jersey is whether Philadelphia is an option. It isn't. Philadelphia has no Chinese consulate, and Pennsylvania applies through New York as well. Washington DC is also out, because the Embassy only serves its own list of states, and New Jersey isn't on it.

Pick New York in COVA the first time. The consulate choice can't be edited once you submit.

Weighing it up? If you work in Midtown and can step out twice on weekdays, going yourself is reasonable. Our COVA guide and Passport to be Submitted explainer are free either way. Most New Jersey customers choose us to avoid two mornings off and the trips into the city.

Who we help in New Jersey

Commuters, business travellers and families

Commuters with no spare mornings

If you already ride into the city, two extra weekday trips to the far west side, inside a 9-to-3 window, are the part people least want to do. We take both.

Central Jersey business travel

Pharmaceutical, life-sciences and logistics teams from New Brunswick to Princeton travel to China for supplier and partner meetings. That usually means an M business visa with an invitation letter.

Families and students

Visiting relatives, holidays, and students at Princeton, Rutgers, Stevens or NJIT. Applicants on non-U.S. passports pay different visa fees, so tell Mandy your nationality first. Children need their own application. See China visas for children.

China visa questions from New Jersey

Is there a Chinese consulate in New Jersey?

No. There's no Chinese consulate anywhere in New Jersey. New Jersey residents apply through the Chinese Consulate General in New York, at 520 12th Avenue in Manhattan.

Which Chinese consulate handles New Jersey?

The Chinese Consulate General in New York handles China visas for all of New Jersey, from Bergen and Hudson counties down to Cape May. In COVA, choose New York as your consulate.

Do New Jersey residents have to go to New York for a China visa?

If you apply yourself, yes, and twice. Even from Jersey City or Hoboken, the Consulate takes no mailed applications, so it's one weekday visit to submit and another about four business days later to collect, both between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. With ChinaVisaMail you don't cross the Hudson at all: we handle the in-person passport submission and pickup on your behalf.

I live 20 minutes from Manhattan. Is a mail-in service worth it?

It depends on your schedule. If you go yourself, both Consulate visits have to happen on weekdays between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, on the far west side of Midtown. Many New Jersey customers would rather not take two mornings off work, but if that's easy for you, going yourself is a perfectly good option, and our COVA guide is free to use either way.

Can I get a China visa by mail from New Jersey?

Yes, through us, not the Consulate, which takes no mailed applications. Complete COVA, email the screenshot when it reads Passport to be Submitted, and mail your passport using the New York instructions we send.

Can an agent submit and pick up my passport?

Yes. An agent needs no power of attorney at the New York Consulate. For New Jersey that's the whole point: your passport makes the trip into Manhattan, not you. We handle the in-person submission and pickup for you.

Do I need an appointment at the New York Consulate?

No. The New York Consulate says appointments aren't required for visa submission or pickup. Visits are walk-in during visa office hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, on workdays.

How long does a China visa take from New Jersey?

The trip into Manhattan isn't what takes time. The Consulate's processing stage is approximately 4 business days for Standard and approximately 3 for Express, counted from submission, and going yourself doesn't shorten it; it only adds two visits. Mail from New Jersey usually takes one to two business days. ChinaVisaMail's end-to-end estimate, from when your passport is received, is 11 to 13 business days for Standard and 8 to 11 for Express. These are estimates, not guarantees.

How much does a China visa cost from New Jersey?

Going yourself saves the service fee but costs two weekday mornings plus transit or Midtown parking, and from South Jersey closer to two full days. The Consulate's fee is $140 for U.S. citizens for any entry type through December 31, 2026, and $23 to $68 for other passports. Mandy confirms your exact total before you mail anything. See our China visa cost and government fees guide.

I live in South Jersey, near Philadelphia. Which consulate do I use?

Still New York. Philadelphia doesn't have a Chinese consulate, and Pennsylvania also applies through the New York Consulate. Cherry Hill, Atlantic City and Cape May residents all choose New York in COVA.

Do I need to print my COVA barcode page?

No. The Consulate needs the application information page with the barcode at submission. Email us one screenshot showing your name, barcode and status, and we print the physical submission copy for you.

I'm travelling to China on business. What do I need?

Usually an M business visa, with an invitation letter from the company you're visiting in China. Our M visa guide covers the letter and supporting documents.
