The Short Answer
Once you submit your COVA application, you cannot edit it while it waits for review. If the visa office finds a problem, your status changes to "Rejected and to be modified" and you correct what they ask for. If your name, gender, date of birth, nationality or passport number is wrong, you need to fill out a new application.
What Happens After You Submit
The New York Consulate's COVA guidelines say a submitted form cannot be modified until consular officials review it. In our experience, that preliminary review takes about 4–5 business days for a complete, accurate application, longer if corrections are requested. This is not an official processing time.
If Your Status Says "Rejected and to Be Modified"
This is not a visa refusal. It means the visa office wants something corrected or added. Log in, read the feedback, change or upload exactly what is asked, and resubmit. The San Francisco Consulate advises logging in periodically to check your status, then uploading additional documents or amending information as required. For what every other status means, see COVA status meanings; if your passport was returned without a visa after submission, see China visa denied or rejected.
If a Core Detail Is Wrong
The Chinese Embassy's FAQ says your name (including any middle name), gender, date of birth, current nationality, and passport type and number must exactly match your passport's photo page. If any of these is wrong, you must fill out a new application form. For other details, the Embassy says to correct or add information as the staff instruct.
If You Chose the Wrong Consulate
An application filed with the wrong office cannot be transferred to the right one. See what to do if you selected the wrong consulate in COVA.
If the Mistake Is on the Visa Itself
Check your visa as soon as you get it. The San Francisco Consulate asks applicants to tell the staff immediately at pickup if the visa contains errors. The Embassy says to contact its visa section or tell the staff on-site. ChinaVisaMail checks the name, dates and visa type at pickup.
