📅 Last updated: April 2026 ⏱ 5 min read ✍️ Mandy Li · Founder, ChinaVisaMail.com

Planning to visit China from the US in 2026? Here is the complete, up-to-date list of documents and requirements for Chinese visa applications — including the new COVA online system all applicants must now use.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is for foreign passport holders (most commonly US citizens) living in the United States who need to apply for or renew a China visa (most commonly a tourist L visa) in 2026. If you reside in one of the 8 states under San Francisco consulate jurisdiction — Northern California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, or Wyoming — this applies directly to you. If you previously held Chinese nationality or were born in China, see our dedicated guide for that situation — some document requirements differ.

For a complete screen-by-screen walkthrough of the COVA form specifically for SF consulate applicants, see our COVA Form Guide for SF Applicants 2026.

The Most Important 2026 Update: COVA Is Now Mandatory

Starting September 30, 2025, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched the COVA (China Online Visa Application) system. All visa applicants must now complete their application online at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/ before submitting physical documents. This replaces the old paper-only application form.

New in 2026: Paper-only applications are no longer accepted. All applicants must use the COVA system at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/ first. Our team can guide you through this process in English or Mandarin — contact us before you start.

Required Documents for China Tourist Visa (L Visa) Renewal

The following documents are typically required. Note that requirements can vary — after you submit your application to us, we send you a personalized checklist for your specific situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do US citizens need a visa to visit China in 2026?
Most applicants renewing a China visa from the US are foreign passport holders (typically US citizens) applying on their current foreign passport. For US citizens traveling to China, visa-free arrangements exist under certain conditions, but ordinary tourist and business travel generally still requires a visa. Former Chinese nationals and applicants of Chinese descent may have additional document requirements — see our dedicated guide for that situation.
What documents are required for a China tourist visa (L visa) in 2026?
Required documents include: your current foreign passport (e.g., US passport) with more than six months of remaining validity, a COVA screenshot showing your name, barcode, and "Passport to be Submitted" status (emailing it to us is required; printing it yourself is optional), a compliant passport-style photo, proof of US residency, and any supporting travel documents. Our service sends you a complete personalized checklist after you apply.
Is the COVA online application required in 2026?
Yes. As of September 30, 2025, the COVA (China Online Visa Application) system at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/ is mandatory for all visa applicants. You complete the application and upload supporting materials online. Once your status reaches "Passport to be Submitted," you email us a screenshot showing your name, barcode, and that status, and mail your original passport and any physical originals specifically required. Printing the confirmation page yourself is optional.
How much does a Chinese visa cost in 2026?
The price shown is the total ChinaVisaMail price. Standard is $449 for one applicant and Express is $494 for one applicant. Couples pay $799 Standard or $849 Express. You do NOT add another $140 government visa fee to these prices — the government visa fee is already built into the total.
Can I apply without going to the San Francisco consulate?
Yes — that is exactly what our service provides. We are an independent visa document submission service. You mail your documents to us, and we submit them to the SF consulate on your behalf. No travel to San Francisco required.
